Boating Overview
Boating is one of the most popular ways to experience Land Between the Lakes, with Kentucky Lake bordering LBL to the west and Lake Barkley stretching along the north and east. Together, these two lakes create tens of thousands of acres of open water, connected by a canal at the northern entrance of LBL that allows easy travel between them. Visitors will find numerous access points, marinas, and campgrounds positioned around both lakes, making it easy to plan time on the water.
In addition to Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, Land Between the Lakes also includes several smaller lakes that allow limited boating and paddling. Each lake has its own rules, access points, and amenities. Visitors are encouraged to view the individual lake pages for details on boating opportunities, restrictions, and services available at each location before heading out.

Visitors without their own boat will find a variety of rental options around Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. Commercial marinas near LBL offer pontoons, fishing boats, jet skis, water toys, kayaks, and canoes. Availability, boat types, and seasonal hours vary by location, so planning ahead is recommended during peak travel months.
Several campgrounds within LBL provide boat ramps, though some are limited to registered campers. Kayak and canoe rentals are available seasonally at select locations, including Woodlands Nature Station and Energy Lake Campground. Most rental providers include safety equipment and basic instructions.
