North-South Trail: North Section

The northern section of the North/South Trail offers a more technical ride for mountain bikers, with single-track segments that move between shoreline areas and wooded ridges. Portions of the trail parallel Kentucky Lake before opening into wide bottomlands that feel quiet and remote. Intersections with Forest Service roads allow riders to break the route into manageable sections or create custom loops. The trail is shared with hikers and backpackers and is best suited for riders comfortable navigating mixed terrain and longer distances.

Canal Loop Trail

The Canal Loop Trail is the premier mountain biking trail at Land Between the Lakes and the top choice for riders seeking a dedicated single-track experience. The main loop spans 11 miles, with connector trails allowing for a variety of shorter or longer ride options. The trail features narrow single-track, elevation changes, and scenic overlooks of Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley, and the canal. It is also open to hikers, though weekends see heavier mountain bike use. Access is available from the North Welcome Station and Kentucky Lake Scenic Drive.

Central Hardwoods Trail

The Central Hardwoods Scenic Trail spans the width of Land Between the Lakes, connecting Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. Designed with smooth surfaces and gentle grades, it is well-suited for casual mountain biking and hybrid riding. The eastern section is paved and offers shoreline views, while the central and western portions follow compacted stone through hardwood forest and rolling terrain. Multiple access points make it easy for riders to explore shorter sections, with rest areas and consistent surfaces throughout the route.

Fort Henry Trail System

The Fort Henry Trail System includes nearly 30 miles of trail through upland and bottomland forest and provides varied terrain for mountain bikers and hikers. Riders will encounter rolling terrain through hardwood ridges, pine stands, and lowland areas. Portions of the trail follow historic Civil War routes between Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. Multiple intersections allow bikers to create shorter loops or longer rides, with options to connect to the North/South Trail for extended routes and quieter riding experiences.

Hillman Heritage Trail System

The Hillman Heritage Trails follow historic roadbeds within Hillman Ferry Campground and offer a slower, more technical experience for mountain bikers. While generally considered easy for hiking, trail conditions can become more challenging for riders, especially after wet weather. The routes pass through a former industrial area tied to the Star Lime Works community, with interpretive stops highlighting local history. Biking is permitted, though uneven surfaces and changing conditions make this trail better suited for experienced riders seeking a technical ride.

Energy Lake Trail

The Energy Lake Trail is a 4.6-mile loop with a figure-eight layout that works well for both mountain biking and hiking. Riders can choose shorter or longer loops depending on time and ability. The trail follows sections of Energy Lake and Lake Barkley, offering relatively smooth riding with scenic views along the water. Wildlife sightings are common, including bald eagles, osprey, songbirds, and seasonal wildflowers. Nearby Energy Lake and the campground provide easy access for bikers looking to combine riding with paddling, fishing, or camping.
