Things to do in and around LBL
Camping around Land Between the Lakes means choosing how close you want to be to the comforts of civilization — or how far you’d like to leave them behind. Outside the National Recreation Area, you’ll find full-service campgrounds with hookups, bathhouses, and easy access to Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.
Inside LBL, four developed campgrounds are operated by the U.S. Forest Service:
Each offers a distinct setting, from lakeside camping to equestrian-focused sites at Wranglers.
Beyond developed campgrounds, LBL also offers designated backcountry camping areas and dispersed camping across much of the forest. With the proper permit, campers can set up away from crowds and experience a quieter, more self-reliant side of LBL.
Plan ahead for supplies, permits, and limited cell service, especially if camping away from developed campgrounds.
Cell service can be limited in parts of LBL, so plan accordingly and be ready to unplug!
Backcountry and dispersed camping in LBL require permits, so be sure to obtain one in advance.
CAmping
Camping at LBL covers a wide spectrum, from established sites with modern conveniences to primitive areas where preparation matters.
Developed campgrounds generally provide restrooms, water access, and defined sites, while backcountry and dispersed camping require campers to bring everything they need and pack it all back out.
Cell service is limited in many areas, and stores, fuel, and restaurants are located outside LBL, so planning ahead is essential.
Permits are required for some camping options, including dispersed and backcountry camping. Wildlife sightings are common, and visitors are expected to follow Leave No Trace principles.
The reward for a little extra preparation is space, quiet, and the freedom to experience LBL at your own pace.
