Rainy Day & Low-Key Things to Do Around LBL
Rain doesn’t have to derail a visit to Land Between the Lakes. Some of the area’s best experiences actually work better when the weather slows things down. These ideas focus on places that shine on overcast or rainy days and give you solid, full-day options without forcing outdoor plans.
This itinerary is built for travelers who want long days outside, a mix of land and water adventures, and a few places that reward curiosity. Expect to be tired in a good way.
Antique Shopping in Cadiz & Hazel
A rainy day is the perfect excuse to make antiquing the main event. Cadiz offers several antique shops in and around its downtown, making it easy to browse without rushing. Just down the road from Murray, Hazel, Kentucky is a well-known destination for antique lovers, with multiple shops packed into a small area.
Together, Cadiz and Hazel can easily fill an entire day, especially when paired with lunch in town and a relaxed dinner on the way back toward LBL. This option works especially well in steady rain, colder months, or anytime you’re in the mood to slow the pace.
Visitor Center, Planetarium & Time in Murray
Start the day indoors at the Golden Pond Visitor Center and Planetarium, located in the same building near the heart of LBL. Exhibits offer a good overview of the area, and planetarium shows are a reliable rainy-day win for both kids and adults. From there, take a drive through the Elk & Bison Prairie, where overcast weather often means more active animals, all from the comfort of your car.
In the afternoon, head into Murray for shopping, a movie, or bowling if kids need a break. With more than 60 restaurants, it’s an easy place to linger over dinner while the weather does its thing.
Southern LBL History Loop: Homeplace, Furnace & Fort Donelson
Rainy weather adds a surprising amount of atmosphere to the southern end of LBL. Begin at The Homeplace Working Farm, where light rain and cooler temperatures still allow for meaningful visits with an umbrella and sturdy shoes.
Nearby, the Great Western Iron Furnace is a short, worthwhile stop that doesn’t require much walking. Continue south to Fort Donelson National Battlefield, where indoor exhibits and a driving tour make it easy to explore regardless of conditions. Wrap up the day in Paris, Tennessee, with shopping and dinner to finish things off.
